SMH GFM Sugar Hit: Radisson – Darling Harbour, Sydney
Yay! I finally join the my fellow Sydney bloggers in posting about Sugar Hits
A small group of us decided to hit this Sugar Hit after a big celebratory birthday dinner at Essen’s (soon to come), previously known as Una’s at Broadway.
We went for a little walk and ended up at Radisson Hotel and Suites. I like the warmly lit lobby and atmosphere to the Brasserie with the blue aura emitting from the bar. The only aspect that was out of place was the music being played and the cricket on the tv but apart form that all is good.
Hee hee one happy waiter
The staff here are very friendly and accommodating as we did not have a reservation. The place was actually quite empty but one flambouyant waiter managed to keep us all entertained with small talk, jokes and some singing/dancing hee hee.
Brown Brothers Rose
We were welcomed with a glass of Brown Brothers Rose which provided a refreshing and bubbly feeling resonating throughout the body with every sip. The sweetness matches nicely with the desserts that we were about to have and the alcohol was barely noticeable.
Another disappointing part of the meal was when a laminated sheet of plastic was given to us with the description of the desserts on it. It just seemed a bit tacky and low-brow. I personally prefer the wait staff to describe each of them to us instead haha (call me snobby).
Asian-style menu description -_-
But soon I my attention was diverted away form the sheet as Here Comes the Food.
Surprice & Delight – Trio of Gajjar Halva with Yogurt and Cream sauce, “King of Pudding” Watalappan (Creme Brulee) with Palm sugar and Mixed Berry Romanoff with Rose double cream.
I started off with the Romanoff and I was in for a very pleasant surprice indeed! The cream and berry jam mixed perfectly to create a very sweet combination and topped off with a sweet fresh strawberry. I recommend leaving this for last as it was the sweetest and the best in my opinion hee hee.
The “King of Pudding” Watalappan had the best name of the three but it carried a very heavy asian taste that I cannot put my tongue on. It might just have been the palm sugar but I don’t think it was. The texture is similar to that of a flan so it was nice and smooth in the mouth. It was an interesting dessert to experience but I would not order it again.
The Gajjar Halva is a combination of carrot, yogurt, spices and crushed pistachio. The grated carrot made it a refreshing dish but it was not very sweet. Another interesting dessert but not on my preference list.

Singapore Tastes – Oyster Omelette
Mmmmm this delicacy is something of an interest – an omelette that is chewy and crispy. I asked the locals what made a good oyster omellete and in the process I was recommended 2 places:
Ang Mo Kio Hub – Hokkien Mee
Clementi food centre – Soon Lee
AMK Hub
The food centre located at the top floor of this shopping mall is teeming with hungry lunch time crowd and lots of local kids! Lots of oysters – a definitie plus! Price was a reasonable $4 for the nice indoor AC and a decent looking plate. A bit oily but delightfully crisp in some parts – I was just glad they didn’t skimp on the oysters like a lot of places do!
Clementi Food Centre
Now the price of this one was the same but the serving – heaps bigger! I found that the taste was just as good – a bit smoother and I didn’t have that oily feeling on the pallette that I was expecting with most fried foods. It had the crispy bits and lots and lots of oysters
But you got to sweat it out in this outdoor eating centre.
So which one is the better one? – personally i enjoyed the Clementi one more because it had the same crispness but was not as oily as the one in AMK hub.
Home Cooking – Chicken, Carrots, |Cumara and Cheese
This post is brought to you by the letter C ^^!
Of all the characters in Sesame Street, Cookie Monster was my favourite ^^! Even though I did not really watch much of Sesame Street (I was brought up on anime hee hee). So I was sad when they had to change him to something else but the memories of the coolest song on Sesame Street stays with me (link). Looking back at this video just then, it is actually kinda creepy with his eyes going all over the place and a few others details… but we are drifting here.
Hahah I see laziness in my photo presentation -_-”
I am sorry to disappoint but there are no cookies in this meal haha even though I should have made some as I really feel like cookies now hee hee. This meal, however contains lots of other yummy foods starting with C so Here Comes the Food.
Honey Soy Chicken
I do not have exact measurements for this as I did it impromtu but generaly just get a nice amount of chicken wings (I used 2kgs) into a nice big mixing bowl. Add a generous amount of reduced salt soy sauce and big ooze of honey. I also crushed and added a few of cloves of garlic. A pinch of salt and pepper and then allow to marinade for a few hours or overnight.
Since I did not marinade my chicken wings for long enough (in a rush to get dinner done) the flavours didnt penetrate into the meat very well but the skin contained juicy mouthfuls of honey soy. Chicken wings are cheap and easy to just bake away in the oven at 180 degrees C for about an hour. Make sure to turn and flip them though as some may be closer to the heat and burn.
Roasted Kumara and Carrots with Honey and Five-spice
This recipe I found in a magazine but forgot which one :S
3 small (750g) kumara
1 bunch (500g) baby carrots
1/2 c (120g) honey
2 tbsp peanut oil
1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
Cut kumara into eighths lengthways and peel and trim carrots leaving a little bit of the stalk attached. Mix all ingredients into a large mixing bowl and toss to ensure all pieces of vegetables are coated in the sauce. Bake at 150 degrees C for an hour and then at 250 degrees C for 15 mins or until browned.
I did not follow the recipe exactly but it still turned out pretty good with a sweet honey glazed taste. I knew I don’t have any five-spice at home but I planned to substitute it with powdered cinnamon but I must have ran out of it as there was none at home
I just added a bit more honey and sprinkled some salt and pepper on top. But adding the five-spice or cinnamon would produce a better dish with more depths of flavours so next time I shall make sure I am fully stocked hee hee.
For dessert nothing is better than some nice cheese and grapes ^^! Ash Brie is brie, which is awesome, with a ash coating which gives it a subtle mushroom taste. I cannot really taste the nutty character but the mushroom is a bit more obvious to me. Match up this bad boy with some grapes and yayyyy! Swirls of flavour in the mouth!
I had a total Ratatouille moment when I ate this combination hee hee (awesome movie!)
