Big Georges Cafe – Alexandria, Sydney

dsc_0012

When I posted about Hong Ha Hot Bread; Jimmy, one of our readers, recommended Big Georges Cafe just a little bit up the road and since he claimed they were better than Hong Ha I just had to give them a go! The problem is I do not go to Botany Rd that often so it took me quite a while to try out this place (about 3 months haha). Thanks to Jimmy, I have discovered a truly more flavoursome chicken roll than Hong Ha! When I first saw the outside I was thinking “Is this the wrong place?” cos I thought it looked more like a Western style cafe with burgers and roasts etc, instead of Vietnamese rolls.

I was rest assured when I saw this little whiteboard with Vietnamese rolls on it… and of course the shelves of crispy rolls and serving station of ingredients.

After confusing the Bánh mì Lady, as we were ordering 4 rolls for 3 people (I was having 2 for research of course!), we could tell straight away as she was making that they were tasty :) Though the service time was considerably longer than at Hong Ha, the taste will be the real test of *insert sombre piano score* which Bánh mì remains supreme!

Vietnamese Pork Roll ($4.50)

These rolls were packed to near-exploding so they are very generous portions for what we pay. I also like how they have a block of the cucumber and radish instead of a little slice as this way you get a nice crunch and more flavour. The pork used here is also different to the one at Hong Ha, being leaner so there wasnt that fatty piece so lost in flavour. Also the mayonnaise/lard isn’t as strong so not as flavoursome as Hong Ha.

Wow… not only did these explode from the bread roll but each bite carried a flavour explosion in the mouth! The chicken they used were actually bbq chicken so there was the sweet and tasty roasted aroma and the addition of grilled onions definitely wins over the raw onions used at Hong Ha.

Overall the chicken roll at Big Georges Cafe is the winner easily and I will definitely coming back here for the chicken rolls but for the pork I might need to do a bit more comparison as I am still leaning towards Hong Ha for the pork. Big Georges Cafe has also got the pork + chicken which I want to give a go but then again I would prefer to buy a pork AND a chicken hee hee.

Apparently not anymore! Tupperware parties are the new rage nowadays, well among a few of us at least hee hee because it is the perfect excuse for a gathering and a feast! Our delightful and generous host, Shez, had slaved in the kitchen to provide us with a spectacular spread of tasty treats for the party so big Thankkkssss to Shez for being an amazing hostess ^^!

Smoked trout, fish roe, cucumberand cream cheese open baguette & Brie, ham and seeded mustard open baguette

Started off with a refreshing savoury note of smokey salmon with crisp cucumber and creamy brie and ham.

untitled-2

Katsusando

These were delicious with good crunchy batter and tender pork, mayonnaise, tonkatsu sauce, fresh lettuce and soft white bread to balance it all out. The only problem was there were too few of them haha :P

Lemon Ricotta Cupcakes

I loved the baby cupcakes soo cutee ^^! The tiny swirl of icing on a dense and tasty ricotta cupcake will brighten up anybodys day.

untitled-7

Ricotta cheese and Peach Slice

Mmm cheese is a necessity at any banquent, pity it was not from her homemade batch though! The sweet peach slices had the beautiful aroma and subtle flavour of cinnamon and good crusty base.

untitled-5

Clockwise from Top left – Profiteroles, mini Lemon Meringue, Chocolate Biccies and ‘Leftover’ raspberry and custard tarts

All of these tasty sweet treats were a big hit but the favourite were the ‘leftover’ raspberry and custard tarts with a soft crumbly pastry and a drizzle of chocolate. They are titled so as they were made from the leftover ingredients from making all the other desserts hee hee. The profiteroles had beautiful airy fluffness to them as well as the meringue.

Our Tupperware Lady – Michelle

She explained to us the brief history about Mr Tupper and the benefits of real Tupperware, then showed us some of the products and it was truly informative and interesting to see all these containers with nifty little extras on them.

And they come in a variety of colours ooohhh!

dsc_0233

Somehow all the items ended up stacked in front of me…

After the Tupperware talk we got to try out some of the products and what better way than to bake scones ^^!

untitled-3

Mr Lee flexing his baking muscles and the silicon baking tray

Silicon baking ware is so easy to use as they just don’t stick to anything and all the food just pops right out!

dsc_0246

Fresh hearty and warm scones with freshly whipped cream (refer to picture of Chef Lex) and jam, yummm ^^!

dsc_0247

We also got take-home party plates! Which may or may not have been nibbled on, on the car-trip home hee hee

My views of Tupperware parties have definitely been corrected thanks to Shez. Thanks again for hosting such a eye-opening event and of course great to see all everybody again ^^!

Pupu’s B’day Boon!

dsc_0169

Hee hee hee hee it says nOOb hee hee hee hee… I’m such a nerd

Firstly Yay for holidays, means more free time which hopefully means more posting (not that I didn’t do much during the exams haha) but just time to relax  ^^!

But onto the main part of the post, a little while back it was Pupu’s Birthday! (there are quite a few June babies isn’t there?). To celebrate we went to have a nice dinner at A Tavola which is conveniently just a few stores down from one of our favourite chocolatiers Boon! The place was all ready for winter with the cute polar bears with scarves and the snowflakes and what better way to beat back this cold than creamy and rich hot chocolates with delicious and fluffy mousses and a praline to match and melt in the mouth ^^!
