Adriano Zumbo Café Chocolat – Balmain, Sydney (7)

Adriano Zumbo

Hope everybody had an awesomely Merry Xmas filled with lots of good food and cheerful times ^^! And for those who braved the stores or going to brave the streets these few days for the Boxing Day sales… May the Force be with you *eh hm* please disregard my inner geek heh.

Remember we had a special guest foodblogger from Singapore and no trip to Sydney would be complete without paying a visit to the mass hype of Zumbo and his famous desserts. So with just a few measly hours left before Brad had to head on the plane the ever-so-friendly Simon took him for a sweet-tooths breakfast of gateaux.

I felt kinda small between these 2… but it’s not the size that counts XD

There was quite a lot of interesting ones this season as with all of Zumbos creations. Some sounded like a crazy combination but sometimes it just works and the only way to find out was to try them. Therefore a group of 3 foodbloggers settled with 4 gateaux for breakfast.

Mmmmm

Google It, Real Life – banana passionfruit creme, citron chiboust, fresh berries & almond croquante ($7.90)

I think we got this more for the name hee hee (g33k re-pre-sent yo!) but it was a very fresh and summer dessert with all the different fruits and fruity flavours. The banana and passionfruit creme was soft and luscious and contrasted against the buttery and crumbly tart base and small snaps of the almond. A safe option for those who do not want any of the daring flavours and wants something light and refreshing for the summer heat.

Not too S-h-a-b-b-y – flourless biscuit, muscavado creme brulee, plantation chocolate mousse & chocolate malt creme legere ($7.90) Gluten Free

This was obviously Brads favourite as he let out a very loud and public moan of pleasure after his first bite. I had to concur on the chocolatey bliss of each bite of this gateaux and the different layers of this dessert. The cracking of the chocolate top was very satisfying but then it doubles as there is another crack at the bottom of the gateaux.

Your Frund in the fridge…. Toasted! – caramelized puff pastry, toast mousse, tomato jelly & melted cheese creameaux ($7.90)

This gateaux was another one of Zumbos more inventive creations and it just works.. well for me at least. There was a surprisingly smooth savoury and sweet combination with the melted cheese and tomato jelly being the main flavours followed by the crunch of the puff pastry. This ’sandwich’ turned out to be my favourite of the day and I would definitely get it again hee hee.

5 6 7 8 – pineapple palm sugar sous vide, lemongrass pandan & vanilla creme legere, coriander cremeaux & peanut sable ($8)

A recommended from our server which was another one we all agreed was a good choice from the nods of my fellow bloggers. I did find the peanuty base was a little bit out of place with the different aspects of the dessert. The chunk of pineapple was coated lovely with palm sugar while the lemongrass and pandan provided a refreshing Asian taste and finally ended with a creamy vanilla creme. To be honest I didn’t know how to approach this dessert and whether we should take a bit of everything or eat each portion separately.

Croissant with jam

Simon did not think the gateaux was breakfasty enough and got a croissant to satiate his craving.

Delicious Adriano Zumbo Cafe Chocolate

Complimentary truffles thanks to Zumbo and Mel

The famous ‘camel toe’ truffle of red wine and chocolate was split in a 3-way… ok I’ll leave the rest to your imagination but I will say it was a bit messy :P The Christmas pudding did taste Christmassy as it should while the egg was beautifully peppery and sweet with good textures and flavours.

oh man, u jus reminded me of the chocolate cake again! hahahahaha i say the public moan of pleasure is an understatement, it’s so, so good! :D thanks both of u for bringing me there on the last day, otherwise i definitely will regret not going there!

Lovely photos demonstrate once again that size doesn’t matter…at least till we see Brad’s and Simon’s posts. Sounds like a lot of snap crackle pop (moan) was going on that day.

I would feel highly inappropriate and chauvinistic eating that truffle. I would still eat it, though.

Ah, looks like I’ve missed a couple of cakes. Must go back. And size doesn’t matter as much as the company you keep :)

Such a great way to see off Brad! As great as this was, I don’t see a trend forming with eating cake for breakfast any time too. Well, at least I hope not!

I can’t say that there was a cake that day that I disliked. All of them were good in their own way. Thought the tomato & cheese sandwich worked well as a dessert, despite what you may otherwise think.
