Longrain – Surry Hills, Sydney

Being a former Usyd student, many a lunch consisted of cheap cheap Newtown Thai (w00t). Which is a good thing for a poor wallets but did not really do any justice for Thai food; so my first visit to Longrain was like a slap in the face of the mighty flavours of Thai!

I like their wall… so bumpy
Longrain has been on my to-eat list for a while especially since I have heard many good news about their amazing cocktails but after the Masterchef (fellow watchers join us on Chocolatesuze’s Masterchef Breakdown) episode featuring Martin Boetz, and his signature Eggnet dish, I bumped it up and made it the next restaurant to visit! Fortunately, my Mumsy’s Bday was coming up and it was the perfect excuse for delicious cocktails and even better food ^^! It was a pity that Martin was not there but the food was still mind-blasting
Crocodile Senior Thai – Haymarket, Sydney.
This is one of those places that you wouldn’t casually walk in and check out unless you were either recommended by a friend or being daring to try something new. The former was applicable to me, being recommended by FFichiban and Monkeyjaja whom I asked for ‘new’ Thai places that I hadn’t tried yet. Why did I choose this? Because the name sold me.
Located a few metres from the tram tracks of Haymarket, Crocodile Senior Thai is your typical Thai joint that offers an extensive menu including a recommended speciality of choosing your ingredients to form a noodle-dish (entitled after its restaurant name). The menus have the yummy and gut-retching smell of dirty towel used to clean the decaying plastic and the waitresses’ attire flaunt themselves.
Here Comes The Food
Dry Noodle with sweet soy sauce, garlic, bean sprout and beef balls ($10): My first impression was that this dish was ridiculously small; however, it was big on taste. The combination of soy and chilli swirled authentic thai flavours in your mouth as you slurp up the noodles that had been made tangy by the lemon grass and slippery by the soy. The beef balls were slightly cool, but complemented the simple nature of this dish. Perhaps a dish for a late-night snack or afternoon snack for the conscious-eater that doesn’t want to spoil themselves?
Tom Kha: Coconut Milk Soup, Lemon Grass and Mushroom with Chicken ($8.50): With a generous serving of mushroom that were sliced thickly to soak up the broth, the coconut aroma and thickness of the cream was accompanied by lemon grass that made this dish Thai. A ‘hearthy’ soup that went well with our ordered rice and had just enough spice to made you reaching for water at intervals.
Pad See Ele with Chicken ($12): Flat rice noodles with oyster sauce that came with slices of chicken. This was my ‘add-on’ dish after my smaller-than-expected Dry Noodles left me wanting more. The ‘wok hei’ (flagrance of the wok) deeply-flavoured the noodles and rose aromatically from the dish, making it very enjoyable. However, there was just a bit too much pepper that made your throat tingle with unease.
Santa is escaping through the air con hahaha..

In Chan Thai – Kingsford, Sydney
I am not trying to interfere with D’s job of eating his way along Anzac Parade but I did happen to end up along their for dinner one night so might as well give him a hand
We had decided on an Indonesian place a few doors down but that was closed so our second choice was In Chan Thai. I think it was the blue aura that lured us like moths into this place.
Interesting artwork on the walls
Open kitchen so we can check if our food has been tampered with
Especially now after that ‘ice cream’ incident that has been in the news! That was disgusting (X_X) but do you guys think it was planted or genuine…. cos it could be an easy million dora comp.. hmmm.
Anywayyyy back onto the more important business of edible and tasty food ^^! After perusing the menu of curries, stir frys, noodles and bbq we were very hungry and ordered a few dishes to share so Here Comes the Food.
Coconut drink
With real slices of baby coconut flesh, this was a refreshing and sweet drink to accompany the variety of dishes. There was a little too much ice which meant less coconut juice but still good.
Tom Yum Goong
The name says it all
Yuuummmmm. The sour and mildy spicy concoction of mushrooms, prawns and ‘erbs was the perfect way to start off the meal. Especially since that sourness is an appetite inducer we were ready to devour the other dishes.
Pad Thai
Another great combination of sweet and sour flavours accompanied by fresh and crisp bean sprouts. Little golden clumps of egg make this a delight but I personally would prefer more peanuts in this dish.
Green Curry (duck)
My favourite dish of this meal
The rich, creamy curry just swirls the flavours in your mouth and warms up your whole body. Since it is green curry it is milder than the others but this allows other flavours to shine in the curry. Fresh vegetables and tasty morsels of tender duck pieces are scattered throughout.
BBQ Beef (Crying Tiger)
To our disappointment, this beef was neither crying nor a tiger
The meat was a little bit dry and stringy but the sour and peppery sauce was a good match.
A content and filling meal at an affordable price ^^! Even though we shouted one of the diners as it was his b’day.
Yoshi Party!!
At a shop a few doors down. Soo cuutteee ^^!
