Home Cooking – Choc Chip Hot Cross Bun

Happy Easter everyonnneeee ^^! wOOOt… *cough cough* ok so I am a big late in posting this but I do hope that everyone had an awesome long weekend last week haha. I was actually quite busy over the weekend working so did not really plan on making anything (and also because I have not made anything for months and months :S) but after drooling over the tantalizing Hot Cross Bun recipes at Grab Your Fork (classic HCB), NQN (cinnamon HCB), Leave room for Dessert (choc chip HCB), LemonPi (classic HCB) and many other great HCB posts out there Pupu and I decided to join in the fun! NOTE: Haha was slowing going through my list of blogs and just saw One Bite More’s HCB post as well -___-

We made a quick trip to the supermarket and picked up some vital ingredients ie the chocolate chips and cinnamon sugar! The rest of the ingredients were a case of whatever I have left in my cabinet and fridge yay
I ended basing mine on Leave room for Dessert’s recipe as she had made a choc chip HCB as well but my plan was to make mine stand out in the HCB sea of posts! I decided to supersize my HCB *insert mad scientist laugh*

The dough a bit too gooey as I added a bit too much milk haha so had to keep adding flour to balance it out but don’t worry! I added more choc chips too ^^!
Now allowing the yeast to work its’ magic… riiiseeee my child riiiissseeeee! *insert more mad scientist laughter*

Glistening coating of cinnamon sugar yummm
Allowing it to rise for a 2nd time. Perfect time to squeeze in an episode or two of a tv series hee hee ^^!

Viola!
A HCB is not one unless it has a cross and as I had finished off all the flour for the actual bun, a choc chip cross substitute will do XD and now all we have to do is pop it into the oven, twiddle our thumbs and play the waiting game. The problem with baking just one huge HCB is the baking time would be different so naturally, I did some convoluted and mind-boggling calculations (instead of just randomly guessing) to decide what temp. and time to use.

Now to add a sense of competition and spice it up, we bought also bought some choc chip HCBs from Bakers Delight just for comparison and research
*ding ding* On the blue floral plate we have the lightweight bun with a twist on the traditional Easter favourite. Comes from a 6-pack but can stand proudly by itself and claiming to have over 100 choc chips, the one and only Bakers Delight Choc Chip Hot Cross BUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

BUT on the other… blue floral plate? we have the challenger. A heavy weight many many many many weight divisions above the Bakers Delight we have the freshly home baked bun which can claim to have more than 380g of choc chips, it is the EXTREEMMMEE BOB (Bountiful Omnipotent Bun)!

Ok I admit that is it not as pretty or neat and tidy as other HCB cos it looks like it decided to rip up in the oven like a brown hulk (hee hee <3 Scrubs) so the cross is kind of retarded. The taste though was very good with the melty choc chips. The dough was not as light and fluffy as the Bakers Delight but still had some good consistency and texture. Overall Pupu and I had heaps fun baking this and had something to munch on for the next few days… or hours haha.
Also a word of warning always pay attention to your HCB while it is in the oven and do not get too distracted by tv cos the bottom of Bob did get a little but burnt

Final comparison shot!
Hee hee check out my previous home cooking adventures if you had enjoyed this one ^^!

HAHA! What a brilliant HCB post, that is a truly epic hot cross bun. The final comparison shot is the best, I almost feel sorry for the wee little Baker’s Delight bun-it never had a chance!

Surely at that size, it becomes no longer a bun, but a bread…and a very tasty looking bread at that! I have visions of HCB toast dripping with butter.

Nice work – That’s a great huge HCB!!! How many did do you think it would feed, if you hadn’t had if over a few days?

you’re funny what with your mad-scientist-ing and your supersizing! was bob eaten sliced with nutella for that extra hit? just maybe?

So would BOB be paired with a massive Counter Burger burger?
Tell me you didn’t eat these on the same day! Or tell me that you did, that would be amazing!
