Kobe Jones – King Street Wharf, Sydney (2)

While checking out places to eat I came across an all-you-can-eat sushi promotion, and I am not one to pass on a special like this especially from a place like Kobe Jones (check out their newly revamped website). At a reasonable price of $25 per person for the promotion I had to give it a go but they cleverly limited it to lunch only so people cannot stuff themselves silly as dinnertime. There were also only a selection of 6 types of sushi that we can choose from but since the formidable volcano roll with the creamy, luscious special sauce and succulent, juicy scallops was on offer I had to challenge myself how many serves of that I could get!

Prepping the mind before the battle

I actually prefer lunch at Kobe as at night it is way too dark and the lovely scenery is enjoyed in a different view but our stomachs cannot be filled purely by the beautiful harbourscape so Here Comes the Food

First Platter!
The first one has a serving of each of the 6 types of sushi but the following platters can them be arranged to only consist of ones of your liking. It is always good to have a sample of everything in the beginning anyway
As I had expected they had all the stomach-filler techniques like extra fat rice and and extra thick sauce to make you drink more water. The rice was the biggest factor, however, as I felt bad just leaving clumps of rice behind, so ended up eating most of it.

Volcano Roll – oven baked scallops layered on a crab salad and avocado roll with Kobe’s special cream sauce and a sesame seed and shallot sprinkle
The best roll at Kobe Jones hands down (and very appropriately named as it causes a flavour eruption in the mouth!) as it has the same awe-inspiring creamy sauce as the No. 1 Special as well as the plump scallops and crab salad. The sauce has a slight sour tinge which was a bit more prominent on this visit than previous ones but it was undeniably delicious still.

Dynamite Roll -spicy tuna, kingfish, salmon or scallops with cucumber and sesame seeds & Spider Roll (behind) – crunchy soft shell crab with avocado, crab salad, cucumber with smelt roe sprinkle
The fish to rice ratio may had been way off but still tasty and packed a nice spicy punch. The spider roll had the tiniest specks of soft shell crab so not really that good but I like my soft shell crab and wanted that craving to be filled. They are definitely more generous during normal service.

Caterpillar Roll – unagi, crab salad, cucumber with avocado layered on top
Soft and flaky eel and creamy avocado is a wonderful combination and one of the better selections on the platter easily.

Kobe Jone’s Finest Nigiri – selection based on market availability
Most disappointing if it were really Kobe’s finest as they piled that rice hard and the fish was all warm and not that tasty.

Second Platter!
More volcanoooo rarr! And wanting to satisfy soft shell crab and creamy avocado cravings.

Third Platter…
Right about now our stomachs were on the verge of bursting but I was still so tempted to order another serve of the volcano roll. Ended up deciding against it but regretting it badly now haha.

In retrospect, a 25 dora lunch is actually quite expensive haha but for all you can eat volcano roll it was definitely worth trying! And if I go again I shall be ordering more than 3 raaarrr!

i’m too lazy to go to the website (yes, i’m sad) so i’m just gonna ask you – how long does this $25 all you can eat go for? looking for work lunch venue and this might be the place as all of my workmates are japfood addicts!

For that kind of outlay, I’m surprised $25 is considered exxy for sushi. I expect to pay at least that to just make it past the hungry stage into the “I’m not full but not hungry either” stage.
Focusing on the non-nigiri sushi seems to be the way to go with this offer.

OMG – How have I not found out about this sooner! I love the Volcano roll here, it is an amazing dish. Must book myself in. Just wish I worked near King St Wharf!

My god that is a ridiculous amount of sushi. I reckon you made it worth the 25 bucks, I wouldn’t have come close! That volcano roll looks awesome!

All you can eat sushi….. How much can one eat with such a lot of rice in sushi? :p Went to Kobe Jones once. Totally agreed dining during daylight is better than at night. Love their volcano roll, grilled tuna salad and sushi cheesecake but $$$$$$$$$.

This is a good deal, mainly because Kobe Jones is usually quite exx-y. I do like their creamy rolls – but not too many! Your lunch looks delicious and the photos are fabulous.

“extra fat rice and and extra thick sauce to make you drink more water” – good analysis
Shame about the heavy packed rice, but I still wanna go try. Mon-Fri lunch makes it difficult though…

I love sushi and I love Kobe Jones’ volcano roll even more! Sounds like a pretty good deal since a single serve of their volcano roll costs about the same price. And all you can eat makes it even better
Great blog you have here by the way!

COol! We tried the Sushi Choo one and intended to go to this one too. Thank god the volcano roll was good (even if the others were a bit hit and miss).

volcano roll is the best. I like all the restaurants up that end for lunch, nice walk and views if it’s sunny.

YIKES warm sushi, now thats the worse!!
July 28th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Love that first action shot of the pouring of the soy sauce!
Everyone seem to agree that the fish/rice ratio is way off. I felt a little bad, but I did leave a lot of rice on the plate… but I guess it’s almost just worth it to have as much as you can eat on the volcano rolls. Was the service really slow and non-chalant when you went?
