Teppanyaki – Sydney CBD, Sydney

Ahhh don’t we all love impulsive restaurant decisions?! Being told at 4.00pm on a Friday afternoon,”I thought he told you to book a place for dinner?” is kind of a daunting situation since well it is nearly dinner time and it is a Friday afternoon. I decided to brave the world and give Teppanyaki a call, it had become one of my must-visits after March into Merivale Launch Party and even more so after reading at ForagingOtaku and Anarcist about their pork belly action.
Since I was going with my family and I know they will complain at the fact that there is only one dish, I prepared them with a detailed and complex explanation about how most of the world going into recession and how there is always the backup plan of filling up on Hungry Jacks afterwards if they were still hungry -____- As we were seated we met a trio of lovely ladies who we had a nice chat about food (well what topic is a better conversation starter
?)
The 33 dora meal also comes with a drink and a side of vegetables so Here Comes the Food.

Sweet Bangalow pork belly, spiced caramel, fennel and apple salad ($33)
As soon as the waitress placed these in front of us, my heart must had skipped a beat from the presentation and smell of this dish. The rich smell of cinnamony and star anisey caramel on a juicy slab of teppan-ed pork belly was more than enough to make me j… jump for joy (Hee hee hee XP) Starting on the fennel and apple salad I concur with the others that it is a bit dry and could have done with a good slathering of the spiced caramel, which I promptly did after the first taste haha. The meat, on the other hand, was total bliss with each bite! The outer surface of the pork was turned super cripsy due to the extremely high temperatures of the teppan but the inside was a chunk of tenderly soft and juicy (with a layer of fat) pork belly. I knew after the first bite of pork belly I would come back just to try the banquet menu.

Veges
This was a very Chinese dish which as the others mentioned had a big influence on the food here.

My last piece…
I must say the pig is such a magical animal and matched with Akira-san (who must be some sort of magician) they formed the perfect harmony to create these bites of euphoria.
The dish was really tasty so we high expectation for their dessert as well.

Double baked Green Tea Cheesecake
We were not disappointed by this cheesecake at all. It was gorgeously soft, creamy, gooey and many other synonymic adjectives! A deep rich green tea flavour but not too strong, with a deliciously crumbly base.

Black Sesame and Vanilla Panna Cotta
A pity it hasn’t been inverted onto a plate
but it was delicious nonetheless. Smooth and creamy, a perfect way to end the meal
It was a very memorable meal and so I decided to thank Akira-san at the end but I think it ended up being a bit awkward cos I left there with Akira-san having a blank look on his face haha -___- I fail at thanking?

Bangalow sweet pork is a wonderful breed. Had some a couple of time recently, so I can have some idea how good that pork would have been!
I thought the presentation of the black sesame and vanilla panna cotta was interesting as all I saw was red, which for me isn’t a colour that I’d associated with either.
Are you trying to include more red into your photos because of how well the red sorbet turned out in Bentley?

Ooh lovely stuff! I wonder how different a cheesecake would be when it’s double baked? It looks so lovely and creamy!

I was first attracted to Teppanyaki because of the font they use, believe it or not. Now, thanks to you, I know the food is pretty good too. BTW, how did you thank Akira – just Arigato?
