Almost Bourdain blogwarming ^^!

Yo G, dat rave was P-H-AT!

A big probs and hollah to Ellie of Almost Bourdain for hostin’ a dope GTG for sum homies. Foshizzle my nizzle, and remember an umbrella for the drizzle…. anyway, back to normality. Ellie had decided to hold a banquet as a sort of blogwarming party, even though her blog is already thriving with countless delicious recipes but it was a good excuse to have a fun meet up and eat! A huge thanks to both her and Mr. Almost Bourdain for preparing sooooo many tasty Malaysian and Dutch dishes!

The rest of us doing out thang; Suze being fully gangsta and soon she will be joining the blood sausage gang :P

The spoilt gang bangers foodbloggers included Yas, Suze, Steph, Simon, Shez, Lorraine and Helen. We were warmly welcomed by the happy family as well as a table with snacks and treats to kick off the feasting :D

Here Comes the Food

Untitled-2

Mini sambal curry puffs

These tasty morsels had a sturdy crust which gave way with a delicious crunch to expose shrimp paste sambal which was very mild and great way to start off the feasting. A problem is they can get very addictive and have to save stomach space for all the other goodies :P

Untitled-3

Spiced Gouda

Chheeessseee ^^! and not just any cheese, it was also spiced with cumin so there was a slight tang with each bite and even more so when dipped into the mustard.

Untitled-4

Rojak

I was really surprised that this was Rojak as all my previous encounters is at Mamak (where I love their Rojak) but is totally different to this more authentic and traditional version. The dark sticky Hao Ko (dark prawn paste) sauce is similar to hoisin sauce and was slightly sweet but matched perfectly with all the fresh ingredients of nashi pear, cucumber, pineapple, you tiao and another fruit which was very similar to the nashi pear.

Untitled-1

Dutch smoked sausage

Mr Almost Bourdain whipped up some Dutch sausages which had a brilliant meaty flavour and slight smokey taste but married perfectly with the mustard. I was also very fortunate to have placed right in front of me hee hee hee.

Untitled-17

Michael Jackson, Barley water and Iced tea; Dutch Bitterballs

There were a few refreshing drinks to accompany our dishes like the Michael Jackson with the fun cubes of grass jelly while the barley water got squeals of delight from Shez and Steph and after tasting I could see why. The bitterballs had very fine minced meat so inside so it was almost like a paste or puree and althought the outside was a bit coloured it just added to the beautiful crunch mmm ^^! Apparantly the bitterballs were preferred by females while males prefer fricandels (below)  but I think they are both awesome and wouldn’t mind having both hee hee.

Untitled-5

Fricandel Speciale

While Shez and Steph squealed over the barley water, Yas and I squealed delightfully over the sighting of “MEAT STICKS” on the box of the fricandels. The combination of onions, curry sauce, Dutch mayonnaise and meat was a winning one and I could had eaten the whole plate easily mmmm but sharing is caring XP

Untitled-16

BBBQing the fish ^^! (Helen snuck out at the last second so I photoshopped her back in :P ninja from littlegamers); pretty vase although a bit trippy looking down; sauces for meeeaaattttt XD

Untitled-7

BBQed Snapper with sambal on banana leaves

One word describes it all: Orsome! Mr Almost Bourdain with the aid of Simon cooked the fish beautifully so the meat was tender and flakey and the sambal spread aromatic and very very tasty. These babies were definitely one of the highlights of the feast yummmm!

Untitled-6

Gehaktbal (Dutch Meatball)

Another meaty dish (I love the way Dutch people think/eat hee hee) and this time with a satay/peanuty sauce!! I was jumping with joooyyy!! And ended up smearing the smooth peanuty sauce on almost everything hee hee. The meatballs were a decent size and with the grilled onions they created a wonderful harmony and balance.

Untitled-10

Oh Ellie!! More food!?!?!; Suze waiting impatiently for food hee hee

Untitled-11

top left – Singaporean Chicken Curry; top right – Beef rendang; bottom left – Malaysian Chicken Curry; bottom right – Nasi Kunyit (turmeric glutinous rice)

An amazing array of currys were presented before us with a very bright and colourful turmeric glutinous rice! Just looking at the yellow sticky goodness makes one feel happily but it is only after they have a bite that they become ecstatic. Mixed with the 2 different curries and the rendang which were all very flavoursome but the winner for me was the beef rendang. The soft and tender chunks of beef were great especially with some satay sauce hee hee.

Untitled-13

Malaysian butter prawns; Gado Gado

We had pretty much stuffed our faces and bellies to the full when Ellie surprised us with a huuugggeee plate of butter prawns and oh my were they buttery. These prawns were swimming in a delicious pool of butter and egg and they picked off one by one hee hee. Yas mentioned something about if he was to go then this was the way he wanted it to happen… drowned in a pool of butter mmmmm. The Gado Gado came with a delicious satay sauce so I was won over instantly hee hee. A bunch of fresh ingredients were smothered in the satay sauce and munched down happily ^^!

Untitled-8

Kuih Bakar

Finally time for dessert and I was silently going “yay, can use dessert stomach” but even that was tested to its’ limits as there were so many awesome sweet treats! These slightly chewy and gooey kuih were expertly cut by Shez and gobbled up by the rest hee hee.

Untitled-9

Chocolate cheesecake brownie

Chocolate – gooooddd, cheesecake – gooooodd, brownie – goooooddd but a chocolate cheesecake brownie? – AAWWEESOOMMEEE! Smooth and creamy blocks of chocolate and cheese goodness. What is there not to love? I only regret not stealing some more haha.

Untitled-12

Portuguese custard tarts from Sweet Belem; Stephs’ pro one-handed phototaking!

Yas generously brought us 20 (Yes! 20, count’em!… ok you can prob only see 10 of them but srsly there was 20) of these velvety custard tarts with an aromatic dash of cinnamon and flakey pastry.

Untitled-14

Rockmelon Sago Pudding; Dulce de Leche x4

Finally to wash down the meal were these refreshing rockmelon sago puddings. They were very smooth and sweet and somehow I mysteriously ended up with that largest cup of it hee hee ;) Simon brought us a taste test of 4 different brands of DDL which was very interesting to try. From left to right we got No-name brand, Nestle brand, Skim Milk and squeezy tube Nestle. I foudn teh no-name to have the smoothest texture and the nestle to have the best taste while the skim was quite bland and the tube version having a chemically taste.

A huuggeee thanks to Ellie and her family for spoiling us and letting us play on their playground equipment, Yas for the tarts, Simon and Suze for the ddl and everybody that came for making it fun, entertaining and memorable ^^!

Ah yes the rojak you eat at Mamak is the Indian Rojak which is all peanut sauce. The Penang Rojak with the black shrimp paste is the real deal and tastes sooooo much better. Glad you got to try it finally!
