The Australian Heritage Hotel – The Rocks, Sydney

Australian Heritage Hotel was always a prime spot for knocking back a few beers after a intense round of bball just across the street at KGV. But little did I know that they served up pizzas like kangaroo, crocodile and emu (until I read Helens’ post)! Unfortunately, it just went on the list of places to-try and was pushed further down the list as other places popped up BUT I did have a plan for it as only a short* 18 months later a group of my family members came from overseas and this place was quickly bumped up the list! What better way for them to try Australia to the fullest than eating some of our native animals hee hee.
*time is such a relative concept
Also thanks to Helen for creating such a easy and handy guide to tourists eats ^^! Thankkkksss!

Look at all those beers!!! *swooooooonnnnnnnnn* and I wonder how long Little Creatures has been beer of the month for hee hee

A few beers and Here Comes the Food

BBQ Emu – Spanish onion, fresh basil leaves and cherry tomatoes ($19.50)
We started off with the emu and had a good chat about the differences between the emu and the ostrich. We also mused about if emus stick their heads in the ground even though even ostriches don’t do it. One thing we were definitely sure on and all agreed upon is that they were very tasty especially in pizza form. The meat was surprisingly tender and was not overly strong in flavour so easily enjoyed by all.

Salt Water Crocodile – Fresh thai leaves, marinated in spicy coconut cream with asian greens ($19)
Next came the croc, the other other white meat (cos everyone knows the first other white meat is baby hee hee)! I was expecting this one to pack a bit more bite but alas it did not deliver, however it was still very nice with a fresh Thai flavour. The meat is a bit tougher as expected but still very enjoyable.

Smoked Salmon

Pepper Kangaroo – Marinated in native pepper with roasted capsicum and native berries
Another Australian flavour which is pretty tasty although the meat is a bit tougher than the emu, the kangaroo is very healthy and low in cholesterol. Just ignore all that cheese hee hee.

Roast Duck – Mushroom, spanish onion, asian greens, shallots, sesame seeds with a plum sauce ($21.50)
My family being Asian absolutely loved this one as it tasted very Asian with the plum sauce. The sweet and sticky sauce is undeniably good though and the sweet duck meat matches it so well.

Honey Mustard Chicken – Roasted capsicum and basil pesto ($19.50)
A good squiggle of the basil pesto added a wonderful to the chicken which were juicy and tender with each bite.
After filling up on some of our native animals we were all stuffed to the brim and to finish off an enjoyable and relaxing lunch my Uncle suddenly goes “So when does the Koala pizza come out?”

Nothing like eating the national emblem! Hehe. I’ve heard lots of good things about the pizza here, it’s definitely on my list to try! And lol at white meat!!

There’s a place near my home that sells both crocodile and emu sausages. I like the smell of sizzling croc in the morning >:D
I notice they’re very generous with the toppings, props to them for not being stingy on the harder-to-find/more “exotic” ingredients. Will definitely put this one on the (18-month) list.

Tried it last Sunday (the hottest Sunday for a thousand years it seemed like) and it was quite good. Not tasty tasty but good for what you get. Alas, we were attacked by pesky pizza-loving flies (they didn’t go for the fries! WTH?) and later on, a gang of bikies. Hehehe. Why don’t they have an indoor dining room?
